Typical applications
Bismuth telluride remains the standard thermoelectric material near room temperature: p-type legs are alloyed toward Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 and n-type toward Bi2Te3-xSex, with zT near 1 at 300 K. The stocked Bi2Te3 lot (50 g, ingot or powder) suits ball milling and spark plasma sintering studies, while 5N beads serve as feedstock for zone melting and directional crystal growth, where residual impurities in the starting beads carry through to the finished ingot.
Bismuth forms low-melting eutectics used in fusible alloys and lead-free solders: Bi-Sn (58/42) melts at 138 °C and Bi-In-Sn compositions such as Field's metal near 62 °C. Bismuth expands roughly 3.3% on solidification, which offsets casting shrinkage in type-metal and tooling alloys. Gram-to-kilogram development work on these systems runs comfortably from 100 g and 250 g bead lots.
Bi2O3 is the common precursor for solid-state synthesis of bismuth oxide ceramics: BiVO4 photoanodes for water-splitting research, multiferroic BiFeO3, and bismuth-doped varistor and glass frit formulations. Bismuth oxychloride derived from bismuth feedstock is the basis of pearlescent pigments; the 4N powder keeps transition-metal color contamination low in optical and pigment work.
Packaging
Beads are packed in sealed polyethylene bottles inside padded cartons; Bi2Te3 and Bi2O3 ship in sealed bottles the same way. Each label carries the product code, lot number, net weight and grade. In-stock lots typically dispatch within 2 business days.
