Applications
Na3VO4 is a biochemical reagent first and foremost. The tetrahedral orthovanadate ion inhibits protein tyrosine phosphatases, so it goes into lysis and assay buffers to preserve the tyrosine phosphorylation state of proteins in cells and lysates, and to inhibit alkaline phosphatase. It also inhibits P-type ATPases and is used as a transition-state phosphate analogue in enzymology and in neurobiology work on intracellular phosphorylation. Away from the bench it is a vanadate precursor for rare-earth orthovanadate phosphors such as YVO4:Eu and for vanadate nanomaterials, and a corrosion inhibitor in phosphate conversion coatings.
