Applications
Grown as a single crystal, TeO2 is one of the primary acousto-optic materials: modulators, deflectors, frequency shifters and tunable filters that exploit its slow shear acoustic mode, plus laser beam modulation, Q-switching and wavelength selection. Melted instead, it is the network former of tellurite glasses, which carry high refractive indices, transmit into the mid-infrared, and host rare-earth dopants for optical fibre and amplifier work. Residual metals degrade optical transmission, which is why the starting oxide is bought at high purity.
