Applications
Most of CaBr2's commercial volume is oilfield: it is a component salt in high-density clear drilling, completion, workover and packer fluids, alone up to about 14.2 lb/gal and blended with calcium chloride or zinc bromide above that, with brine density and crystallisation temperature together setting the operating window. Away from the wellbore it is sprayed onto coal before combustion as a bromide source, oxidising elemental mercury in the flue gas downstream, and used as a drying agent, in freezing mixtures and flame-retardant blends, and as feedstock for other bromides. It has also been studied as the working salt in hydration-based thermochemical heat storage, which remains a research finding rather than an established use.
