Applications
ZnBr2 is best known as the electrolyte in zinc-bromine flow batteries and as a dense clear brine in oil and gas well servicing, where it displaces drilling mud during completion and raises mud density. Concentrated aqueous solutions are used as transparent radiation shielding, including viewing windows for nuclear work, and the anhydrous salt acts as a Lewis acid catalyst in organic chemistry. Its perovskite role is a narrower one: it supplies zinc and bromide together for in-situ Zn doping of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals, replacing part of the PbBr2 in the precursor.
