Applications
CrCl2 is the stoichiometric mediator in the Nozaki-Hiyama-Kishi reaction, coupling aldehydes with vinyl or aryl halides under nickel co-catalysis, and with allyl halides directly. It is also the reagent for Takai olefination, which converts aldehydes to vinyl iodides in the presence of iodoform. Paired with a chiral ligand and a manganese co-reductant it is the chromium source for catalytic asymmetric carbonyl addition. Beyond synthesis it serves as an oxygen absorbent and as a precursor to other chromium complexes.
