Applications
AlCl3 is the classic Lewis acid for Friedel-Crafts acylation and alkylation of aromatics: catalytic in the alkylation, but stoichiometric in the acylation, where the ketone product ties it up as a persistent Lewis adduct. It remains in use for cationic hydrocarbon polymerisation such as polyisobutylene, while bulk petrochemical alkylation to ethylbenzene and linear alkylbenzene has moved to zeolite and solid-acid catalysts. In coatings it is the chloride precursor for chemical vapour deposition of alumina, run industrially from AlCl3, CO2 and H2 with the water generated in situ rather than fed; CVD of aluminosilicate mullite from aluminium and silicon chlorides is a research-scale route. It is also a component of room-temperature chloroaluminate ionic liquid electrolytes for rechargeable aluminium batteries.
