Applications
Anhydrous CrCl3 powder is the source charge for physical vapour transport growth of atomically thin CrCl3 flakes, a layered van der Waals magnet studied in two-dimensional spintronic structures. The same powder is a precatalyst in Nozaki-Hiyama-Kishi coupling of aldehydes with vinyl and aryl halides, where a stoichiometric manganese or zinc reductant generates the active chromium(II) in situ. It is also a precursor to other chromium compounds and to chromium plating baths, and a catalyst for olefin polymerisation. One practical difference from the hexahydrate: the anhydrous salt is essentially insoluble in cold water and dissolves only on addition of a trace of chromium(II), typically generated in situ by a reducing agent.
