Applications
FeS is the classic bench source of hydrogen sulfide on demand, generated by reaction with hydrochloric acid in a Kipp's apparatus. Industrially it is a resulfurising and alloying addition in free-machining carbon, alloy and stainless steels, and a pigment in ceramics, glass and paint. In materials work the FeS phase is of interest for lithium-ion battery and supercapacitor electrodes, which is a separate line of research from pyrite, FeS2, the phase pursued as a photovoltaic absorber.
