Applications
BiCl3 serves as the bismuth precursor in an atomic layer deposition process for the thermoelectric semiconductor Bi2Se3, through dechlorosilylation with (Et3Si)2Se. On the bench it catalyses the Michael and Mukaiyama aldol reactions and serves as the starting material for other bismuth salts. It hydrolyses readily to bismuth oxychloride, BiOCl, which is itself a route to that material.
