Applications
BiBr3 is the bismuth source for lead-free bismuth halide perovskite-like phases such as Cs3Bi2Br9, dissolved with cesium bromide in hydrobromic acid for optoelectronic work. Bismuth(III) halides are also inexpensive and comparatively benign catalysts for organic synthesis. BiBr3 promotes the intramolecular etherification of silyloxy aldehydes and ketones to substituted tetrahydropyrans, where the active species is understood to be HBr and BiOBr from partial hydrolysis of the deliquescent salt.
