Applications

SnBr2 supplies tin and bromide together for halide substitution in tin perovskite absorbers, an alternative to organobromide salts such as MABr or FABr when moving a mixed iodide-bromide composition towards bromide. Away from thin films it acts as a reducing agent and a Lewis acid, forming adducts with donors such as trimethylamine, and it undergoes oxidative addition with alkyl bromides to give organotin tribromides. The Sn(II) centre oxidises in the presence of oxygen and SnBr4 is a recognised impurity in tin bromide stock.
